Fiberglass Cloth
Six ounce, plain weave fiberglass sets the standard for home boat building. It conforms to any shape, easy to wet out and provides the durability you expect of any hand-built canoe or kayak. For general recreational use a single layer of 6-ounce cloth puts most builders in their happy place between durability and boat weight.
Canoe builders often turn to 4-ounce fiberglass for the interior lamination on a solo canoe. A logical choice for a smaller hull carrying light loads. When you need a beefier laminate use a second layer of 4-ounce glass laid on the bias.
Or, for an expedition-tough canoe use 8½-ounce twill. On a 45 degree bias, it will drape over any contour. This cloth was developed for aerospace, but use it when you need high strength, fast wet-out, and drapability.
